Quickie Movie Review: My Spy
Billed as a comedy/action movie, it was very formulaic and chock full of the usual tropes. It was predictable as fuck, tongue-in-cheek, self-deprecating, it didn’t take itself seriously ( and you shouldn’t either), it sometimes went over the top without really going over the top to the point of being ridiculous in a not-so-funny way.
Arguably, not since Schwarzenegger has an actor made muscle-bound stiff acting almost riotously funny as Dave Bautista did in My Spy.
And arguably, not since Iron Man 3 has the comical chemistry between an adult actor and a cute-kid-with-a-smart-mouth actor been such a delight to watch as it was with Bautista’ s JJ and Chloe Coleman’s Sophie in My Spy.
For all its predictability and by-the-book tropes, My Spy was truly hilarious to watch. It leaves you smiling, laughing and filled with that warm fuzzy feeling that’s so welcome at such a time as this.
My Spy had one job to do and it did such a splendid job of it with buckets full of laughter. It was a pinky promise kept (*no blinks)7.5/10
